Wondering about the backstory? The ‘sack coat’ gained popularity over the longer and dressier frock coat and by the 1870s had become the regulation style for conducting business and casual recreational pursuits. In a way, the sack coat was a wearable rebellion against the formal and fussy traditions of the time.

Our version, highlighting all the style elements of the late 19th century, features a soft, brushed-cotton in sable brown finish and with a high-button front that was often worn fastened just at the top to let a vest show through below. Other notable design details include a notched collar, unvented back (to maintain sleek silhouette), decorative seaming and 3 buttons at each cuff. There are no outer pockets, but necessities may be stashed in the handy interior breast pocket. There’s also a hidden “ticket” pocket for concealing tickets, cash or other small valuables.
