As a gentleman of leisure he attended many banal society functions, but was always well dressed in our Frederick Four-In-Hand Tie. When he tired of small talk and lukewarm lemonade, he slipped silently into the study for a hand or two of poker with other likeminded gentlemen.
Our modern business tie traces its roots back to men’s elaborate stocks from the early 1800’s. By the end of the 19th century ties had slimmed and lengthened to our modern shape of a long narrow neck with 2 paddle ends of varying width. We have seen these style of ties advertised as early as 1891 and were available from the Sears and Roebuck catalog of 1897 listed as a “black tie with neat red, blue, white, wine, gold or lavender figures…(or) dark blue, or dark red back grounds with neat contrasting figures (or) thousands in light and medium shades of all kinds” So, choose what you like best to match or contrast with your waistcoat.
