Puffing pipes, talking politics and styling it up in our Purple Vintage Quilted Smoking Cap these were the notable highlights of time spent with peers in his Victorian man cave.

In the Victorian era, smoking caps were worn to keep gentlemen warm while lounging in cold, drafty rooms. They also helped keep the tobacco smoke from their hair and clothing so as not to offend the ladies when gentlemen returned to the party.

Our tasseled replica, velvety and adorned with accents of quilting, captures the opulent and ornate style of the era. Inside is lined with velvet for a very soft, comfortable fit. Cap features a 3.5 inch crown topped with a golden tassel.

Velvet fabric is a plush blend of 65% acetate and 35% nylon. Imported. Dry clean only. Available in sizes L and XL.

Part of our Vintage Smoking Collection.

Note: tassel length may vary.

Wear it around the house with dressing gown
I really enjoy this hat to help me stay warm on colder nights before retiring to bed. A cup of tea, a good book, or a classic TV show, the hat is stylish for any occasion. I have worn it to parties and received many compliments about it.

smoking cap
We keep our house at 60 degrees during the winter and it can feel pretty chilly at times. My older husband has lost a lot of hair and had been wearing a winter knitted cap in the house. I just couldn't stand looking at the dopey thing anymore. Pirates of Penzance is one of my favorite movies and I remembered the Major General wearing that smoking cap & robe so I went looking online. I found this smoking cap at the Historical Emporium, got his approval and ordered the purple one. It took him a couple days to get used to wearing it (he felt silly) but I liked it right away. Later, a met a male friend of mine for lunch and he was wearing a hat. He said he'd just gotten a haircut and his head was cold so I told him about the smoking cap. He immediately asked if it was the kind with the tassel...like Groucho Marx! So, there are probably a lot of guys out there with cold heads who would be interested if they weren't afraid of looking silly. I hope you can start a trend with this practical solution for those saving a little money on the heating bill!
