19th Century Town Coats
By the latter half of the nineteenth century, shorter coats became more commonplace, particularly for daywear. These coats elongated past the hips and were more fitted than other coats that came before. The town coat is known differed from the sack coat due to its more fitted nature, and by keeping the waist seam. The town coat is usually single breasted with a lapel collar, and three buttons.
The style was worn several ways. Either buttoned at the top button like a sack coat or worn completely open in order show off the vest and pocket watch chain. Due to the lower set of buttons often times the collar of a vest may have been visible above the topmost button.
