Temperatures are dropping here as Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas bells will soon be ringing. Each year in our town, we celebrate the season with downtown merchants staying open late, carriage rides on Main Street, mulled cider, chocolates, and other Yuletide frivolities with many locals in Victorian Era dress. I too, shall be attending in fine form, and warm as toast with this Inverness Cape to keep the cold at bay and present an appropriately attired image. I'm what is known as a serial kilter . Which simply means if I'm not at work I'm in a kilt. The cape I bought will be a great addition to my outfits in the winter when it gets cold here in Ohio and I'll still look stylish and look even better once I remove it. I purchased this not for historical purposes but as a layering option. We've had a few cold days so far here in southern Wisconsin, and the Inverness Cape has performed very well. It's quite warm, and though I was worried about sizing since it's a one-size garment, it fits me well. Even generously; I'm 6'0" with 34-inch sleeves and the cape falls just above my wrists and mid-calf. I've worn it over a collared shirt and over a fleece hoodie, and I'm confident that it will fit over a heavier coat as well. The one criticism I'd offer is that the front of the cowl is liable to blowing open in the wind. A button to secure the cowl in front would be a convenient addition, though possibly not historically faithful to the garment as worn originally. I might work with a tailor to add some method of securing the cowl against the wind. But that's a minor point; I would still buy this cape again and I'm quite happy with the purchase.

I purchased this to for Dickens on the Strand this December, and to take with me to Scotland but it was more than I needed for Scotland. I look forward to wearing it this winter.

I wore it together with other Emporium Clothers for the Charles Dickens Festival in Deventer, Holland. It fits perfectly, is very good material and keeps wonderfully warm. I only can recommend it

We live in Michigan and winters can get pretty bitter. My husband had been looking for an Inverness cape for a couple of years, but they’re pricey or costume-y. I stumbled on this one while trying to find the name of the style coat and was surprised to see it was made of wool…and had good reviews. This one runs about the same price as a good quality topcoat, so it wasn’t unreasonable. When he opened it, he was delighted for three reasons: 1) It fit! he’s 6’4” and broad-chested, so normal clothes are screaming for mercy) 2) It was a heavy-weight wool. This weighs more than the Swiss-issued military dress coat he has. Fits him better, too. 3) It is warm. We are at the beginning of our winter and it was too warm for him at 32°.

Honestly this is such a nice coat! It arrived in a timely fashion and looks good on stage! It’s a little heavy but that’s because I’m weak!

My husband loves wearing this cape. When he is really cold there is room to wear it over his casual winter coat and still look good. A complete success.

I wear formal Scottish attire frequently, and the Inverness is the traditional outerwear. Yours fits wonderfully, and is suitable in any weather. I do not hesitate to recommend it as an excellent value.

Possibly the favorite item I've ordered from Historical Emporium so far, this is a strong, sturdy, and warm overcoat with great style. Definitely draws attention, but doesn't look like a cheap costume coat at all. Warm, practical, and effective... kept me comfortable and dry on a recent boat tour of Prince William Sound, Alaska.

I purchased this for a costume design for Watson and it worked lovely! We were able to Quick Rig it on and off the actor so quick costume changes were possible. Will be buying time period stuff from here always!

Very well made. Heavy frock coat. My correct size is 44R but it was too big in the shoulders. It's such a nice coat I choose to have it altered rather than spend it back.

Having been a Civil War reenactor for almost thirty years, in various time periods, I like the look of a frock coat. And wonder why they were ever shortened to the sack suit. The Emporium is my go-to shop for period clothing. I only wish I could afford more!

The Emerson Frock Coat is very well put-together. It's a little heavier than I was expecting. Not too much so but, with a cardigan, would make for a quite reasonable Fall weight overcoat. The inner pocket is a bit higher than one might expect, but not at all difficult to access. Just an adjustment going from my Coburn to this (plus left/right transition). Very happy with the build quality, fit, and finish.

This coat is exactly what I was looking for it is well worth the $$$$

My issue was resolved quickly and painlessly, and I now own a really nice piece for Halloween and theater. So much nicer than any piece of junk you'd get from a discount store.

I ordered this cloak along with the Historical Emporium's Vintage Black Velvet Smoking Jacket in order to dress as the Third Doctor from BBC's Doctor Who. Worked like a charm, and I can always dress as Jack the Ripper for those more horrifying of times. I am most certainly enjoying it. The satin has a nice shine to it so the red catches the light quite nicely. A downside to my combination of clothing is that the satin slides off the velvet so I spent a bit of time adjusting it to look right, but when I did it was glorious.

When I originally ordered it, I specified a size 42. Turns out that these run about one size too large, so I had to exchange it for a 40. No problem. Instructions were easy to follow. I repacked it with the exchange form from the website, shipped it off. Within three days, the corrected size arrived. Easy!

Bought this for my Victorian-themed wedding outfit and everyone LOVED it! It paired exquisitely with the darker grey vest I also got from Historical Emporium. The color and texture of the fabric are lovely, and it's also very sturdy - a great bonus for a formalwear garment. I'm around 230 pounds of a somewhat athletic/hefty build, and the 46 fit perfectly. I wore it all through the ceremony and all day with no desire to take it off. I could wish for some external pockets, but it does have two inside pockets, and if you're wearing a vest with it, you've already got some pockets anyway. Great purchase! It will be a mainstay of historical dress-up occasions with the other items I've bought here.

I bought this for Mark Twain Days. Lots of people dress is 1860's attire for the event. I look like I just arrived out west during the Comstock Era.

With a traditional cut lacking exterior pockets and having a separate piece of fabric for the lower part of the coat, this sleek coat catches the eye with a distinctive and classic flair. At the same time the heavy cotton, vaguely reminiscent of the early days of denim in the 1800s, is hardy and comfortable. I've received many compliments wearing it with or without the full period complement. I'll caution that it is a bit stiff at first--I had to wear it a few days before it felt more natural, as it the case with heavy cotton fabric. Most of my traditional coats are black. This is such a fun contrast.

This is an early bulletproof vest. Heavy construction fabric. I'm not sure of authenticity, but wished for an outside pocket.

Heavy, heavy coat. Good fabric. If you are from the lower half of the US you may want to save it for colder seasons. Fits well.

I wear stuff like this on a daily basis, so I need it to be quality. Historical Emporium comes through every single time. The product came quickly and arrived with no damage. The fabric is very stiff, so I do recommend either steaming it, or just wearing it a lot when you first get it so it softens up. Also, it runs a little big. Maybe order a measurement smaller than you'd expect. I will definitely be buying another one of these in a different colour, eventually.

An absolutely delightful coat, very well made, and good fit. The tails go down to the back of the knees on me -- 5'7" female in an XL. Sleeves are a little long, but expected for the time period.

I am not the usual skinny person who can buy a medium or large of anything and have it fit them. I've had some trial and error trying to find a tailcoat for a vampire event. I ordered using the size chart based on my shoulder and chest size and the jacket fits perfectly. Very happy with the fit as well as the quality.

A beautiful, well made piece that I expect to have for years to come. It's the final part of my "Regency Tuxedo" and fits quite well with the black Drop Front Pants and red Cavalier Vest that I had purchased previously.

It is well made, but it's a little towards costume-like rather than Saville Row, but it will be cozy and festive on Christmas morning. The velvet is soft and the color is rich. If you want the couture quality craftsmanship for a smoking robe, you can spend $300 more.

I ordered a 2XL, which is slightly too large for me (XL is almost too small, and 2XL is too big). The jacket is very nice and very attractive, but it is very large through the shoulders. I may have to have the jacket altered for better fit (but I accepted that eventuality when I ordered the 2XL). The items I ordered arrived quickly and in good condition. I look forward to future purchases from Historical Emporium. I love the styles -- apparently, I was born at least 100-years too late.
