I bought this for Mark Twain Days. Lots of people dress in 1860 attire for the event. I look like I just arrived out west during the Comstock Era.

Boots are perfect.

At first these look awesome. You can't even tell that the laces (which are plenty long enough btw) are synthetic. As far as the lining goes, I wish it were leather and not synthetic. I really like that the soles are leather, that kind of authenticity is hard to find. Generally speaking they have been very comfortable for the start ,however going up and down stairs is slightly bothersome. After wearing them 5 times they already have multiple wrinkles and I don't expect them to last more than 2 years. If you need these for "costume" purposes and not everyday wear like me they are perfect. Despite all these issues I would still say that they are a decent inexpensive addition to my wardrobe.

I love these boots, so cool, so sharp style wise. But I take 1 star away because the laces were way too short, they were meant for shoes, not boots. I had laces from another pair of boots that I replaced them with, no big whoop!

After slipping these boots on, I was surprised that they were very comfortable as far as boots go. I wear a sz 10 and I expected a tight fit. These are nice and roomy, not too stiff and the ankles were not at all as bad as one review implied. Worth the money? Every penny! Beware: As with any good leather soles, these are extremely slippery and need a good asphalt dance at once. Very very happy with Historical Emporium as usual.

These boots look just as nice as they appear in the photo gallery on the website. However, take note of that stiff ankle. The leather there is also just as stiff as it appears in the photos! As soon as I put them on and took a step, I realized I'd sadly have to return them. If I had kept them, I would have worn them to one event, and then I would have never touched them again. If you're used to high ankle dress boots, I imagine you'd be fine. But if you aren't used to it, you're in for a wake-up call! Still, I cannot say enough good things about how classy they look.

I have trouble getting boots and shoes to fit. But these were absolutely great. Love the feel of them.

Well made, classic style, leather construction, nice shine. Leather soles a little slick until you wear them for a while to scratch up the bottom for traction. I went a size larger since my feet tend to be slightly larger than 10. Glad I did. Figured I'd have to wear an extra thick sock, but they're not loose at all. I've worn them for several hours at a time already and no discomfort at all, nor do I feel they give me inadequate support where it counts on my feet. Very happy with purchase.

I received the boots in just a few days after I order them,they were packaged very professionally. The boots looked great but the souls were very slick and the function I was going to the sidewalks and roads maybe wet or even have snow on them. I tried the boots on and they squeaked louder than normal leather dress shoes or boots. I returned the boots without any problem and was refunded fully in just a couple of days.

These shoes look authentic to the late 1800's or early 20th century. They fit and look great.

Well made shoe/boot

Exactly what I was looking for. I put a scoring blade in my utility knife and lightly cross-hatched the sole to provide just a little more traction. They are great in the garden as the smooth sole does not cake up with loam and they polish up good enough to wear with my tuxedo on formal occasions. The pair weigh less than one of my former work boots.

Best dress shoes ever! Very convertible (Recommendation walk on rough concrete before event) an everyday wear.

I purchased these boots for my husband as a Christmas gift. He loved them. We are extremely pleased with the quality and fit. Worth every penny!

I ordered size 9 (my regular shoe size) but this boot runs about one size large and is very wide in the heel. I will need to return for a size 8. Otherwise, the boot is well made, has a leather sole, and looks period.

my old cavalry boots were warn out from shoots. these new ones were a great replacement. i belong to SASS and my alias is CUSTER. also i am a veteran of the 12th CAVALR.

Admittedly I was a bit skeptical about spending that kind of money on boots. However I was blown away by their quality. I could go to war in these, if I was on a horse and carried a sword and lived in the 19th century. I love them. they are thick, heavy duty and will certainly last a life time. Might leave them to my son. Buying everything I need from this company. All of the items thus far have been exemplary. Huzzah!

Historical emporium has great customer service, I emailed them to ask about the fit of these boots and what size they would recommend. They got back to me very quickly and the size they recommended was a perfect fit.The boots seem to be historically accurate and good quality leather.

Just what I was looking for. Not as tall as some of your other offerings. Just the right size. Much better than the plastic covers that came with my St. Nicholas outfit. My western boots just didn't look right, even here in western Nebraska.

I normally wear slightly larger size 8 boots to get the width but got these in size 7. Perfect fit!

The boots looked even better in person and are unexpectedly comfortable to wear! The craftsmanship on them is very impressive! These handsome boots are made far better than any modern equivalent. Once again I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of items carried by this shop.

As a life long reenactor and cowboy action shooter I am constantly looking for new "personas" to assume. These are great value for money and exactly as described. The soles are slick when new as with any full leather sole. When I get some wear in them, I will get a traction sole and heel applied. you would need to pay at least twice as much money elsewhere to get a boot as authentic and as well made as these. They do fit a little large, but with thick socks are comfortable.

I ordered size 9 boots after reading reviews that the boots run large. I normally wear size 9.5 boots and still the boots were a little too big. I put insoles in the boots and that really helped the fit. The quality and workmanship of the boots are great. A great addition to my civil war uniform. Overall I’m very pleased with these boots.

Very good experience all around. The product was excellent (Black Cavalry Riding Boots) and customer service was very helpful. The boots only come in whole sizes and I am usually a 10 1/2. I ordered 11 and they were way too large. I spoke with customer service and they were quite helpful with tips and eventually helped me exchange for size 10's. Very easy and relatively quick turnaround on the exchange. The 10's fit great by the way, the boots run a tad large for their sizes. I went riding in them today (2 different horses) and they were great! Very authentic look, feel, grip and construction. Oh, the sole at the toe was a bit too, ok, WAY to square for my liking, so I rounded them off just a bit on a grinding wheel and re-blacked with a Sharpee marker. Perfect.

I have a wide foot, usually requiring a 12 4E, and despite that have had to use an old-fashioned shoe stretcher to make anything close to a comfortable fit in the many cowboy boots I have bought over the past few decades.. Square toed boots with a high arch are really hard to find, especially with a leather sole. Size 12 was out of stock here, so I took the plunge and ordered a 13, having first asked if I could return if they did not fit. They responded...no problem. Boots arrived in time for my 75th trip around the sun on this satellite, and that day I celebrated (wearing my "riding pants" and suspenders and vest as well, which I had bought previously). I swear my Arab gelding looked a hell of a lot better that day with my shiny new boots tucked into his stirrups. (Just need some longer stirrup straps to go over the arch...but I don't use spurs much these days anyway). A natural felt insert helped the boots fit, and they were real comfortable first time on, which counts a lot if you have gout in your big toes!!!. I especially like the height of the leather upper, since my previous 10" boot tops used to catch on the saddle flap at times. I could go on, but you get the picture. Six stars at least.

I picked these boots up for my Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi costume this year and they were PERFECT! Size I landed with was a size smaller than I usually pickup (I bought an 8. I usually wear 9+). I ended up wearing a hiking sock underneath so the boot was a more snug fit.

I can't get over the quality for the price of this boot. I wear a size 11 and I ordered an 11. it does run a little large, but as in other reviews mention this about this boot I was expecting it. I just added a thicker sock and the fit is comfortable and pleasant. I can't wait to get them all broken in and have them get that natural "patina" that a good pair of boots deserve.

Very nice boots! Hard to find good mens leather knee high boots like this, and these are very well done. Plan on wearing these for multiple reasons! One boot fit slightly larger than the other one, but another sock fixed the problem fine.

I am playing Adam Pontipee for a production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I wanted to look authentic, but wear a boot that I could run, jump ,dance and fight in without it breaking down. These boots have been all of the above. I am about 250 pounds, and I have worn the boots every day for a month and have not seen even one hint of degredation of the seams or soles. I am totally pleased and would recommend these boots to my closest friends.

Great for historical reenactments and good enough for every day use. I use size 10.5-11. I ordered size 10 and they fit loose which is perfect because I use thick insoles.

These boots are made basically the same way as was done in the 1860s and issued by the govt., though men could purchase their own boots of a higher quality. Square-toed, they are wide enough for me and I wear a 9-Wide and might have been okay with a size 8-Wide in these boots. Well constructed and sturdy though unlined and your pant legs will probably have to be stuffed into them, but that's how these were worn back in their time. Excellent for reenactment. I shall be Lt. Col. Sawdust!

I wear a size 12 EEE, finally , a boot that comfortably fits, had others that did'nt even come close to these.

I have a fair number of western boots. Some were for SASS, others for snake country. I will summarize these boots so you can decide for yourself. Overall, for the money, they are a good deal. The boots are not lined so they will sag unless you stuff your pants into them. Soles and heels are leather and will not stand up well to water. I bought rubber sole and heel caps and glued them on with Shoe Goo, also sealing the leather edges, boot heel, etc. My foot size is 10D. I often buy a size larger (since I don't run marathons in boots) in order to be able to remove them; but since I read so much of these boots being oversize, I bought 10 normal width. The length is good but the width is way large. I added insoles. There is no spur shelf so getting these off (with a tight fit) will be murder. The tops of my boots measured 18" in circumference. Since these boots measure 18" from heel to top, without a large circumference it would be very difficult to get your foot into a narrow shaft, tall boot, without a zipper. Ever wonder why people buy tall boots with zippers...this is why. These are the tallest boots I have ever found and I have 6 pairs of high-priced kicks. I bought these for work I do not want to subject $350+ boots to.

I was a little leery when purchasing these boots as the price seemed too good to be true compared to what other boots in the same style run. Reviews overwhelmingly complained that the top opening was too big, which was a godsend for me, I have a hard time finding tall boots because I have massive Calf muscles and almost every boot is nowhere near loose enough in the stovepipe to get up my leg. These ones were perfect. Great value and made very well for the price. Toe is very very square, but i like it, reminds me of civil war era dragoon styled riding boots. Would buy again.

Purchased the tall riding boots in black. Fit very well. Satisfied with the quality. The only way they could have been better is if they were fully leather lined so the shafts would stand on their own.

Teriffic boots. Ordered one full size smaller than my usual shoe size, and the fit is perfect. Would happily recommend them to anyone.

These are fantastic boots. I have been eying them longingly for a while and finally ordered. As of this review, I have been wearing them for several weeks and have to report that they are excellent! The leather is high quality. These are well made, serviceable boots that would easily stand up to a day in the saddle--they are not cosmetic props. I was a little concerned at first because I have a difficult time getting a good fitting shoe, so I am cautious about ordering footwear I can't try on first. The other reviews are spot on about the sizing. The boots run large, so order down. I wear orthotics and envisioned winter hunting socks, so I ordered a 9 when I normally wear a 9.5 I have my orthotics in and thick socks and have a near perfect fit (they are actually just a tad on the roomy side, but that's what I wanted). Great boots!

These boots are very nice and comfortable. My only dislike is that the top of the boot is a little too wide. I am tall and thin. The width is suited for a much bigger calf.

Most people say order a size down. I would go so far as to say order two sizes down. I wear a size twelve, normally. But the size 10 boot fits perfectly. Solid construction. Better than anything you'd find at JC Penny's. I would say that the calf circumference is a bit large. It still works. But it doesn't quite have that narrow look all the way up that is seen so often in the old pictures. I do think they are worth the price.

After reading many of the reviews before purchasing the boots, I decided to go with my gut feeling. I wear 12.5 boot and decided to stay with the size 12. The fit was perfect. The toes were a little more square than I like and the spur ledge was a little narrow, but all in all great boots and a great value. I was amazed at how fast I received my purchase. Love these boots! I have been burned on lesser quality boots, but these have more than made up for bad choices over the years. The fit is perfect - I went a whole size smaller based upon other reviewers recommendations and after speaking with a very nice and patient company representative. The height is perfect - I wanted something I could wear my knee breeches with without leaving a gap. They are also easy on, easy off - a major plus! Furthermore, the boots are stylish for multiple periods - no need to look any further. And have I mentioned comfort? These fit the bill. I would buy again - and perhaps I shall! These are great! I was initially hesitant after reading some the reviews about these boots - but decided to pull the trigger anyways and purchase them. I was VERY pleasantly surprised when I received them and discovered that they were not the costume boots I was half expecting them to be - but really nice name brand boots that I had actually been looking at at a department store just the other week. Yes the sole is slick - but that will pass with wear - and there IS a slight creaking - but after looking online at more reviews I read a very easy fix for that and it will help prolong the life of the boot. All in all - very satisfied!

We will be sending the boots back as they look like they are made out of plastic and we cannot give them as a gift as planned.

I have loved every purchase I've made from Historical Emporium. I own a gorgeous overcoat, a vest or two and a pile of shoes -- the latter being the main thing that drew me to the site and has kept me coming back. Unfortunately, these particular boots have not delighted me the way my previous three shoe purchases have done, and for just one simple reason: CREAKING! These are the creakiest shoes I've ever owned, to the point where I don't dare wear them to work in my VERY quiet open-bay office. You can hear the creaking from halfway across the cube maze. I need to look into a way to reduce the creaking noise -- I know simply wearing them will help, breaking them in, but is there anything Historical Emporium can recommend to help speed up the process? A kind of oil or wax to rub in and improve the give? Don't get me wrong -- they're gorgeous boots. But this issue really has been disappointing, and next time I'll stick to buying more of the kind I purchased previously, which don't have this problem. Thanks -- I am still a big fan!

The shoelace is a little shorter than I'm used to, and, as was mentioned in other reviews, the slick leather outsole will require relearning to walk. I bought a size smaller than I do for my modern shoes and it fits great, and looks great.

I searched and searched online for a dress boot to wear at my wedding this summer, until I found this shoe. The pictures on the website made it look like everything I had looked for. I ordered the boot and eagerly awaited its arrival. I was so disappointed, however, when they came that I immediately returned them. The pictures on the website are not at all true to the color, texture, and quality of the product's leather. If you want a better idea of what the boot looks like, check it out on the Stacy Adam's website. Even their pictures aren't perfectly accurate. This shoe could not be worn for anything other than a costume. The leather upper looks and feels like plastic; the shoe laces are also of a poor quality. I would not recommend this boot to anyone who is looking for real footwear.

A fashionable gentleman could not do better. I wear a size 12 or 13 shoe, normally the latter, and I went with a 12 in this case and they fit well, maybe even a little large. I would recommend them to anyone.

These boots compare VERY favorably to an authentic similar pair I own. The leather is somewhat thicker, and therefore somewhat stiffer, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I am considering getting the same in black so I can save the originals.

though a nice pair of boots they did need some breaking in. the soles were slippery and i slid around carpeted surfaces for a few days so wear those boots in early. also its been a few weeks and I've already lost 3 of the upper lacing pins. i may have been lacing my boots too tight but that's the way i like them. other than that i love theses boots there aesthetically pleasing with a simple design and an air of sophistication.

These boots are made of quality material and are constructed very well. I wear them as an entertainer for hours on end with no foot pain. They are holding up very well, and when the time comes, I will definitely reorder these boots. I would highly recommend them to everyone.

My now husband purchased these shoes after months of looking for the right style. We did a steampunk/victorian based wedding. We purchased all his clothes for the wedding from this site after months of looking elsewhere we returned to complete the outfit. They where just the last piece to match some wonderful clothes. We did an out door/indoor wedding. They stood up well to the dirt, dancing, and sword play at our wedding. We then took them on our hoonymoon and they filled in for modern dress shoes.The shoes did squeak throughout the wedding and week long cruise, so do take some time to break them in before any important events. They are stiff, but that like the squeking we preseve with go away with a proper break in period.We will return again to buy more outfits for future events from this site. My husband looks horid in a modern suit but dashing in the victorian wear.

Am headed from Seattle to Grassington UK, where PBS' "All Creatures Great and Small" is filmed. The day after I arrive, the townspeople will all be dressed up in late 30s/early 40s costumes to honor the TV series. I wanted something to wear that would allow me to join in, but that was easier than a zoot suit to pack. Spats fit the bill, albeit in a rather comical way if warm weather finds me wearing them with shorts! Anyway, my plan is to leave the spats behind for my friends who live in Grassington to wear at next year's celebration. I know they'll be quite pleased with the ones I purchased,

I will be attending at least two weddings this year, as well as a college graduation. I am certainly wearing these to the weddings and possibly the graduation as well. The satin with the contrasting black buttons will raise the level of my look greatly. I expect to receive many compliments on these spats.

These are excellent. They look very fine quality. They buttoned up easily enough and looked great. I wore them to GENCON this year as part of my steampunk outfit. They are so nice I will wear them on those occasions when I want to really dress up. They do not look cheap or costume at all.

I purchased these with an "Inverness" coat. I wear them with the Victorian Tailcoat also sold by H.E. These are a little more expensive than other spats on other sites on the 'net but the quality is no comparison. These fit well, button up well & look sharp. I bought these spats to improve on the snap version I had. (I'm a bit snobbish when it comes to dressing) and these are exactly what I wanted. They look great.

My home was not within this Shop's int'l shipping location, but the hospitable staff of the Customers Service had kindly instructed me to direct the shipping address to my friend's home in Canada. Eventually the item had been brought to me safe and sound by my Canadian friend. I found my new spats to be of excellent quality and style and have taken to wearing them on a regular basis. Not just for special occasion. I may just order another pair!

My husband and I wore these spats at our wedding. Originally, I was a bit suspect, but I'm glad I overcame that feeling because they added an excellent touch to our roaring 20's/high society themed wedding. Everyone complimented them and told us that they made the outfit (we wore formal tails). The material is superb and very durable.

Although this site specializes in Victorian Era clothing, It works great for Twenties themed male formal accessories. Since Mens formal never had a drastic change. Got many complements on these spats.

The mens button spats are unsatisfactory. The stitching is terrible, & the button hole stitching is all coming loose.

Amazing quality

I purchased a different pair on line and was disappointed with the quality and returned them. I ordered a pair from Historical Emp., they arrived in a timely manner and were of excellent quality and not a cheap costume piece like the first ones I received from a different Amazon Co. that were cheap vinyl China made prop.

Of all the idiotic things I added to my formal tux, these spats are the things people notice and compliment. Who knew?

They fitted well although it took some effort to button them.

Well made, good looking spats. I use them for LARP and put them over a pair of Easy Spirit leather tennis shoes so that I can walk around on site with slightly less modern looking shoes that keep me from hurting my poor foot bones. The elastic has held up well so far (two three-day events so far) and I have gotten lots of compliments on them.

Delivered 7 days ahead of the deadline. The spats themselves are of amazing quality and seem more than durable enough for long-term wear.

Ordered a pair of these to dress up my Formal Hufflepuff outfit and they're great! In the past I've only be able to find cheap, vinyl costume spats which, while effective, have also been rather uncomfortable. These were much more comfortable, especially about the ankle (I have just over a 9" ankle and ordered a pair in small), and look smashing! I'm already looking at different styles and colours.

I bought these white spats when I bought my grey pair. I have not gotten to wear these yet as I bought these for formal wear. I love the fabric though! Very nice looking. If the grey pair I've already worn for 2 weeks gives any indication, then these white pair will certainly be a delight!

The Spats are a great look with dark trousers and black boots or shoes. The ankle measurements provided made for a great fit.

I used the measuring guide to order and had to return. The product appears to run small. However, when you get the correct size for your foot- very snazzy!!

The material of these spats is high quality and the covered buttons make them perfect for a Great Gatsby white tie affair.

This is the third pair of spats I've purchased from the Emporium, and as always, they're quite pleasing. This time, however, I had a special project - tie dyed spats for Easter. So this review will come in two parts: General and Crazy Crafter Who Drops $30 On Spats They Might Destroy. General - lovely spats! They're made from a soft, light weight twill with satin lining. Very comfortable. I did not think until after it was far too late to call customer service and as "are these preshrunk cotton?" that they might be preshrunk cotton. (Spoiler: they're preshrunk cotton) The one word of caution I would give is that after leaving them sopping wet for 24 hours, there was rust coloured staining on the buttons. Given that these are not meant for puddle hopping this will likely not be an issue for most people, but if you do fall in a lake or some such, at least hit them with a hairdryer somewhat sharpish. I tumbled mine on low in the dryer and they came out Just Dandy. Crazy Crafter - survived being tied up and dunked in boiling dye baths repeatedly like a champ! I used RIT's Dye More line because I had it on hand, but since they're cotton, the regular RIT should do. Took the colour beautifully, not only outside, but inside as well. This means that the white satin spats would likely also dye. Don't let them sit wet overnight (see above). Tumble dry and iron on medium heat. As with everything else I've ordered from Historical Emporium, these spats are of excellent quality. These are not costume or novelty items, they are made to be worn. I wear a 10.5 and my ankle measures just over 10" so I ordered the large to be on the safe side. They fit perfectly over a pair of wingtips, look sharp and button securely.
