14 inch Brass Telescope with Leather and Case

Item: 001988

$31.95

Before he left home shortly after his 16th birthday, Papa had given him a handsome brass telescope with case. Set your sights on prosperous future, Papa said, and follow the Big Dipper over the Sierra Nevada if you need to find your way home.

Looking over the spyglass with a mix of melancholy and excitement, the young man slid it back into the compact leather case which he then tucked in with his kit and on his way. He left without looking back; his past, present and future all coming into full view.

12x power. Brass pipes with black leather trim, telescope measures 15 inches extended, collapses to 5.5 inches. Felt lined black leather case measures 6 inches long by 2 inches diameter, and features an adjustable shoulder strap and brass hardware. Imported.

Good enough, glad I purchased
The telescope itself is fine, heavy duty. But like other reviews said, the leather seems cheap and I think it won't last very long, it seems like it will start peeling. I have not figured out how to use the magnification yet.

Needed Repair But Good Once That Was Done
The 14 Inch Brass Telescope looks good as part of my "Steampunk Explorer" costume, though I agree with those that have pointed out that the black leather slip case doesn't look as good as the telescope itself. (The slip case leather doesn't look nearly as high-quality as the leather that surrounds the largest segment of the telescope, which actually looks quite "snazzy".) More importantly, the front lens had detached from the end, presumably during shipment, and was just sitting within the telescope when I received it. Fortunately, the lens was still in good shape and the end piece (that it should have been attached to) simply screws off, so I was able to remove the end piece, carefully Gorilla Glue the lens back to the inside of that end piece, and (once the glue had dried), screw it back on to result in a usable telescope. (Though I was originally more concerned that the telescope "look the part" as a component of my costume than that it actually function, I was still glad to see that after my repairs, the telescope actually did function properly.) The detached lens is the only "problem" aspect of anything I've purchased from Steampunk Emporium / Historical Emporium, and my purchases include the Antique Brass Pocket Compass with Hinged Lid and the Articulated Folding Brass Binoculars - Antique Brass, as well as a shirt, vest, tie, and pair of pants. (The clothing, in particular, seems very well constructed.) The 4-star rating, instead of 5 stars, is for the...

Most definitely a prop. This should not be surprising considering the price. You CAN see through it by adjusting its length, though it's not really worth the effort, and I'm not at all certain it is 12x power as stated. But I did not buy it to find Blackbeard. I DO wish, however, that the leather case and strap were given a bit more consideration. The leather is thin and really quite cheap-looking. I'd gladly pay another $10-$15 for better leather and a bit more attention to detail. (If you dye the back and sides of the strap to match the black of the front, it improves the look, but replacing the strap is the better option, I think.) This is a classic example of "you get what you pay for." And because of that, it would be unreasonable of me to complain. It is what it is.

Set Piece
The telescoping tubes are not tight enough and makes it wobble, and the lens does not focus but it was purchased as a decoration piece so it was okay. quality of the finish is good but the storage leather-like tube is a little cheap looking

Very Nice
This is a very nice looking item. It is solid and well constructed. The case gives it a very old time feel and look. It will make a great addition to my costume gear!

Good Prop
This would be ok to use as a prop but is not functional. Very blury and you can't see out of it. Also it smelled bad when it arrived, probably a die that was used on the leather, needs time to air out.

Meh...
While the scope looks fantastic, it arrived completely useless to use as an actual spy glass. The optics were either made wrong in the manufacturing or were damaged during shipping. While I have no need to use this as an actual telescope, it would have been nice to be able to. The leather case it came with is also of a very poor quality. Cheap, thin leather that appeared to have started to mildew prior to shipment. I am thoroughly unimpressed.

Good deal
The telescope is great; especially for the price. It's solid and it works. Some people have given poor reviews because they claim "it doesn't work". Many of those are probably because they don't know that you focus the telescope by adjusting the length. The reason I did not give it 5 stars is the case. It is very low quality leather and when it arrived it looked like it had been stored in a warehouse for a number of years. I cleaned it up with some oil and a soft cloth and it looks much better.

Well made
Very nicely made. I'd actually consider buying one for more than just the appearance. Though the appearance is one of quality it's also very functional with decent optics.

Nice!
I'll admit, I was a wee bit worried when reading some of the reviews of this telescope. Fortunately, I did not run into any of the problems others have described. The only problem was getting my own eyes to focus, when they did the view was perfect and clear! I was surprised by how much 12x was and had to try to find things further away to focus on (at first I kept seeing strange blobs and was concerned, haha). As for the case, the strap is on the wimpy side, but in my past experience with leather, even when it's a small amount it usually holds up well for quite awhile when cared for, so I'm not too concerned.

Prop only
"Recommend to a friend" is a bit qualified - it would depend what they wanted it for. If it's only going to be looked at from the outside, great; the brass and the overall appearance are nice. The leather of the case and strap are pretty low-quality, but it's what I expected for the price. The only thing I was actually disappointed about was that I would have liked to be able to at least *see* through the thing. I wasn't expecting good optics or indeed any real magnification - just clear glass I could see through. But it's impossibly out of focus and there's obviously no way to focus it.
