Davenport Frock Coat - Charcoal Gray

Versatile and Wonderful

Item: 003789

Availability: Sold Out

A Historical Emporium Exclusive!

Velvet trimmed and finely tailored. True to bygone times, our Davenport Frock Coat creates a silhouette found on gentleman from the 19th century. A handsome alternative to basic black, a charcoal coat adds both polish and panache to the Victorian wardrobe.

Before the shorter, boxy jacket of the “sack” suit (still being worn today), the frock coat was the standard look for men. Longer and seamed at the waist, our vintage-look coat is fashioned from charcoal gray wool, black velvet covered buttons at front, cuff and back, a black velvet collar and lapel, and intricate detailing on the back. Necessities can be kept at hand in the interior breast pocket. However, should you encounter an unsavory character in some back alley or less-traveled road, your valuables will stay hidden in two cleverly tucked-away tail pockets.

Fabric is an 85% wool blend with a full acetate lining. Velvet accents. Imported. Dry Clean Only. Coat measures approximately 42 inches in length. Available in sizes 36–52. Also offered in brown.

Sizing Notes
Our coats are made with typical American sizing, meaning your chest measurement (in inches) is the size you should choose.
To measure your chest: Raise your arms slightly and measure just under your arms. Be sure to cross over the shoulder blades and the fullest part of the chest. If your belly measures larger than your chest, use your belly measurement for coat size.
Longs: If indicated in the selection list (e.g. 46L,) long sizes may also be available. Longs are approximately 2" longer in the back and sleeves.

Beautiful Coat!
I always get my period victorian wear from here. Thanks for this great purchase. It was a little stiff at first, but once we put it on our actor, he wore it so well! The cut and the look is really great and perfect for what we needed.

Thoroughly Stylish
I like this coat so much that I may start wearing it on a regular basis instead of just for shows or historical events. Up until now, i would have made one of these with my own materials, but this one is so nicely done that I'm not going to bother undergoing the expense and take the time and effort to do that any more. I'm impressed enough with the quality, the cost and the speedy delivery from Historical Emporium that I may just forego wearing modern clothing all together instead of just on stage.

Not so well. Patent!
I buy coats all the time from Historical Emporium. If anyone can see this before buying I urge you to read this; I do NOT RECOMMEND BUYING IT IF YOU ARE BUYING IT as a useful coat, but if it's for a one day thing (like for a costume) yes. If you're using it for a festival of some sort or a gathering, DON'T YOU'LL BE EMBARRASSED, YOUR FEELINGS WILL BE HURT AND YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED *The Design is well--But there is no padding, unlike the other frocks that feel strong, this is a very thin frock. It is so thin if you held it up to the sun you would see right through it. It says it's 100 percent wool, maybe the outer part is but, the whole thing is bad! I hope they can put padding in next time; I unfortunately have to re-design it to fit the criteria of a coat. I am indeed disappointed, but I have no doubt it was manufactured at a place in Guatemala where it's 1 cent per stitch. I don't know. I am very disappointed to have purchased it for the priced that it came but of course, I have no choice, this is only a costume that I need before February 21st. This coat should be priced at $69.85 if it remains to be the type of wear that it is now.

Frock Wool Coat
With all the junk being made nowadays, I didn't have high expectations of this being as high quality as it actually is. I've wanted one of these exact style, color and fit for years and I was lucky enough to find this one. No outside pockets is the style I like, having a couple pockets inside is very nice. Because of my shoulder/chest size, finding this type of coat has been tough. Since I will be performing my very first wedding and this fit the dress code of the wedding couple, I just had to give this one a try and we'll it's perfect for me. Surprisingly, I expected this Wool coat to be very heavy and it is very light and being lined with nylon it won't sit against me to overheat. You can't go wrong with this coat!

fantastic purchase!
I've wanted a frock coat for awhile, so I was very glad to see Historical Emporium making these vintage styles with such solid quality. They didn't let me down. It fits perfectly and, damn, I look pretty badass, if I do say so. Quick FYI...stick with your size if you plan to wear your frock coat over a suit jacket (this is how it's typically meant to be worn). But, if you plan to wear the frock coat as a single jacket over a waistcoat only, consider ordering one size down. I am a 38, but found the 36 fit perfectly as a single jacket. Hope this helps.

In love
Have for years wanted a jacket like this, and finally got the opportunity, it's just incredibly wonderful to wear, just like a suit jacket, suit thin, not too thick, missed the size, but it has a tailor fixed. Can nothing but recommend further;-) From my side, a daily use ;-)

Frock Coat
A nice-looking coat. It's a little thinner than I would have liked, but having said that, it will mean that I can wear it in warmer weather too. I didn't realise that it has no pocket on the outside, which is a bit of an issue for me, but I'll be able to work around that. It's beautifully styled and the velvet collar really sets it off, as does the styling around the rear vent. Recommended.

"Not a bad purchase"
That was a quote from the recipient of this jacket. The tropical weight of the wool is a blessing for people who do reenactments. The style, very nice, period appropriate. The workmanship looks to be of quality. Time will tell. We will need to have the shoulders professionally tailored, as my husband is more round in the middle than broad in the shoulders. (Thank you fou the sizing info!) Overall, we are pleased with this jacket and look forward to many celebrations looking the roles we will be assuming.

A fine and dandy coat
Fits like a glove and pleases the eye, as well as being nice and warm on a chilly evening. The velvet really brings the piece together.

Not bad but........
Coat arrived across the Atlantic in good time (with the other items ordered) - our VAT tax hit a bit hard but hey-ho who cares! The coat is thinner than I expected but nicely cut. However 2 of the velvet buttons split when I first buttoned it up and I haven't got them back together yet. Not a big issue but they are a bit.... well, cheap and nasty to be honest.

Versatile and Wonderful
I love wearing this coat. Add some nice trousers, a well starched white shirt, fine silk tie and antique Victorian Prince Albert watch chain and I feel like a million bucks. It's just different enough to be special without making me look like I'm wearing a costume. A finely made and classicly elegant frock that I enjoy wearing to work and out on the town. When everyone else is wearing an off-the-rack suit or sport jacket, this piece really pops.
