Fall front or broad fall trousers featured a flap panel called a fall that opened in the front and fastened with buttons. In the late 1700s, this style evolved from the codpiece, which had been in use for several centuries to protect a gentleman's modesty when doublets were short and pant legs were not connected.
Unlike the codpiece, the fall was fully attached to the pant leg, and designs varied could be broad or narrow. Fly front pants were introduced in the 1840s and eventually became the standard that we know today.
