Planter Flat Crown Hat

Item: 002617

You might hear some folks call our Planter Hat a "plantation hat" based on its "shady" reputation out in the fields of coffee, cotton and tobacco farms of the antebellum South. The practicality and straightforward good-looks of this hat has made it popular for generations.

The stiff, extra-wide brim keeps sun from weathering the neck and face while the attached cord keeps this hat from budging when confronted with an unexpected gust of wind. Made from 100% wool, unlined. Crown rises 4 inches, brim 3 inches wide. Made in the USA. Available in sizes M-XL.

Planter Flat Crown Hat
This product is good quality. My problem was sizing. I used the sizing aid and ordered a size too small. Be careful on your sizing.

nice but tight
Large should include that extra quarter inch that was not there! If I had ordered extra large size the hat would have fitted me like a bucket! The size LARGE should include an extra quarter inch for people who are genuine half sizes-- between Large and XL. This is the case with shoes as well. I am a genuine 11 and a half and so it is with hats! Be more inclusive! Damn you! Otherwise I like my hat, even if it gives me a headache!! Now I can be Zorro and play classical guitar like the wind! Thank you! Grrrrr!!!

Great topper
A great hat! A perfect match for a hat in an 1820s local portrait which is the period portrayed. Makes for a more casual and relaxed look instead of the formal looking top hat.

Amazing quality...
But the fit is a bit tight. As someone with a mondo Melon for a noodle I expected an xl to fit watermelon sized craniums, it may need to stretch to accommodate my brain girth.

I thought the Hat would be a little more sturdy.... but I am very pleased with the look. With a little Hot Steam... I was able to shape the hat just the way I needed it.

First planter/Tomstone style felt
So I've worn Stetson straw and felt cowboy hats almost daily for 15-20 years. This is the first of purchase, of a lid that is not sized by inches and, I did not try on prior. For the price and the fact that I'll shape it to my style/personality, I'm quite pleased. This lid will ware sooner than heavier felts yet, the ware will be a great contributor to the look I seek. I still ware my straw most of the time but, now when stepping out I'll be someone with assured presence. Cause let's face it, somebody's got to have some style. Add my duster and it's hillbilly deluxe. Billing, shipping and overall service was very pleasing.

Hat strings
I didn't want the hat strings on the hat. Decided to go ahead and order the hat since that was the only way it came. I will take the strings off of the hat to wear the hat. The hat strings are not an optional item. It would possibly help others decide to purchase the hat without strings if you made the hat strings optional with a wait time for delivery (custom order).

Planter Flat Crown Hat
In anticipation of playing the role of Fagin in a local community theater production of "Oliver!" I searched and searched for a wide, flat brim hat with a fairly low crown that would complement my costume, but not "break the bank." I finally ordered this one, and although the crown was not quite as low as I had wanted, it still turned out to be an excellent choice. The fit and look both are perfect. And it is very sturdy ... I accidentally sat on it (a black hat on a black chair) and thought that would ruin it -- but the crown went right back into shape when I popped out the crumples! A great hat that I most certainly will wear and enjoy for many more years, along with the other quality period pieces I have previously purchased from Historical Emporium.

Hat review
Ok hat it was what I was looking for. I think for the price it should have been finished better and lined.

Planters Hat
I really like the hat. I would have liked a lining, but for the money it is a great value. I purchased this hat for my wife to ride in. She doesn't particularly like cowboy hats, and living in South Dakota where winds of 20 mph are considered "breezy", she needed something with a string to latch on. I will probably replace the stampede string with another that is of higher quality, the slide does not hold at all. Shipping was quick, even in December. Very happy with the purchase.

Works really as expected. Every head will be different, so be aware of yours and measure it so be careful. The hat cord was poorly made, and needs improvement. I removed it entirely and put on my own, an adjustable one so that I could make it tight. This hat will fly off with a sudden gust of wind. Nonetheless, I'm very happy with it.
