I bought this vest after being less than impressed with my 'old fashioned' vest from another retailer. I absolutely love this vest! It has a full cotton, tan back to it. The cut is great. Going for a bit of a settler look for my wedding on my side, and this one helped me hit the mark. Strong recommendation for the look and quality.

Pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Like previous reviews said, this thing is BLACK, it makes everything else look grey by comparison. Love it!

Spinal Tap references aside - this waistcoat is seriously black. Not so much just 'black' as BLACK. It's so black it even provides contrast against other black clothes. It's so black that light bends around it. This is a good thing. Like all of the other Bonaventure waistcoats, the texture of the velvet is is lush, the cut is sharp, the colour is rich and deep, and the internal contrast provided by the bright antiqued buttons and the trim (through texture and sheen) is a strong design feature in and of itself. A highly recommended purchase, and one I wear regularly to work, and casually. It also works as a formal waistcoat, naturally, and is durable as well as attractive. It also has the dual benefit of going with absolutely everything in my wardrobe and immediately raising the tone of anything I wear it with. It is pure class in waistcoat form. You will not be disappointed with this item, believe me.

I now own and wear daily several pairs of 1800s trousers and have acquired this, my second vest. Have never been a vest fan but I am now--this and my other vest are in daily use now and look spectacular--very well made, too.

This is my second time buying an "Old West" vest for my costume as a "Living History" re-enactment player. The first attempt was at another web site and the sizing turned out to be an educated guess, it didn't fit. At the Emporium the sizing instructions were accurate and it fits perfectly! I also appreciate that I can purchase the components of my character/outfit one at a time and still have that continuity that the whole outfit looks like it was purchased together.

This is a well made vest. The material is a heavy duty cotton and feels like very soft canvas. I gave it 4 stars only because of the plastic buttons. They are heavy duty buttons, but I would have paid more money for a vest with buttons that were more period correct (such as wood or another natural material). Also, the tag on the vest says "Gunslinger Vest" and the brand on the label is Frontier Classics. So it is designed as a western style vest. I was wanting something in a Victorian style to wear with my bowler hat, but it will also go well with my western hat. I ordered a size Large and it fits true to size. I wear a size 42 suit and it was a little big, but was able to adjust it down to my size with the tab belt on the back. Plenty of pockets.

Quality is spectacular and the shipping is as if I walked into the store and purchased it, delivery from the west coast was quick like I've never seen. Customer service top notch, size of clothing was as described. Best to get one size larger as with all dress clothes due to the high waist. Best clothing company ever!!

This is a great quality, great-looking vest. Sewing quality is outstanding. The material is thick and soft. Buttons are quality, too. I normally would fall into the Large sizing, which I ordered initially, but had to re-order a Medium, which fit perfectly.

Wearing this vest is not only comfortable, but remarkably historic. I have only received compliments when I wore it - everyone has asked me more about it, and I've told them right away about the Emporium. Works superbly with a cravat and a pocket watch. Hopefully, one day, the mainstream fashion can return to this golden age! We can only try.

We were looking for a vest for my (now) husband. We finally found the right one on the site. We bought 2 sizes as we didn't know which would fit best. We chose the smaller one and returned the larger one. We had a family member take in the vest a bit because it was still a little big, but there is no way my husband would be comfortable in the next size down. Love it! Quality of the fabric and styling are excellent! Great crossover piece with a classy touch for my favorite looks -- can go from formal to casual depending what it's combined with. Something I can wear to work, church, and downtown. The rounded bottom hem works nicely for displaying a fancy belt buckle. The Large size is slightly big for my 44" chest, but the adjustable buckle in the back makes it work, sizing is comfortable without buttons straining. Love the four front pockets, plenty of options for storage. The color is better described as brown/black, not brown/navy. The darker stripe is a soft black, not a blue tone. Love the brown/black stripe as it is, coordinates with more of my shirts/pants/jackets than the brown/navy would. The vertical stripes give a subtle slimming look.

I ordered the whole suit; Frock coat, pants, vest and spats. Great quality. I'm 6'2" 215lbs and the XLs are a little on the large size, but I'll be getting them tailored. Not sure if the large would have done it, so not a big issue. LOOKS GREAT. Good weight to the fabric.

Seems great. Haven't tried to wash/clean it yet but the quality is nice. Trust the tape measure. I couldn't bring myself to order a size large as 100% of my wardrobe is XL. Ended up having to exchange it. I think I could have even fit a medium. Trust the tape measure procedure they give you. Also, go a size up on the pants as suggested. The Ferndale combo looks pretty sweet.

As always, these particular vests go with everything. Comfortable, they go with any costume be it Western, Victorian, Steampunk or Modern formalwear, it is the "goto" vest. I am patiently waiting for black in my size to become available once again and I'll have three colors. If you wear vests, you must consider these.

This was my first time ordering from Historical Emporium. My package arrived very quickly, and the vest was packed well. I was thrilled by the texture and trim, and the purple color really shows up great on stage. It is very well made. The purple leaps out at the eye and provides an excellent contrast against a black suit (I wear it with a Victorian cutaway frock coat and Livingston brushed cotton trousers) and a white shirt. Like all of the other Bonaventure waistcoats, the velvet has a lush texture, the colour is of an impressively deep and rich lustre, and contrasted well with the offset black trim (in both colour and texture) and the bright antiqued buttons. It is a very handsome addition to any gentleman's wardrobe, and comes very highly recommended. The only way you won't make an immediate impression on entering a room while wearing this waistcoat is if everyone in the room is asleep, or if all the lights are off. Mind you, in the latter instance, the purple is so vivid I'd be surprised if it didn't glow in the dark...

Love this vest, A little darker than I expected but beautiful just the same. Now to find the right shirt to go with it.

Truly loved the look and is ideal in many ways. At the same time, the velvet feels a bit cheap. Perhaps using a cotton velvet could make it stand up better and look richer. But I am sure you know best. All the same, it is a minor matter and have already bought four more in other colors.

Vest is very comfortable, very soft. Fits well and easy to move with. The color is extremely dark, much darker than the photo indicates. It almost looks more black than green in certain lighting conditions. The vest still looks good, just not quite what was expected.

I purchased this vest to wear under my open Santa robe. The quality is not as good as other products I've purchased from Historical Emporium but the main issue is simply it is terribly hot. It holds heat in like a plastic bag. I wore it three different times, several hours each time and was miserable. Sweated and overheated. Wearing my black velvet from last year.

I really love this vest it is the newest of the 5 I have purchased so far. I will say that the velvet makes the vest look very luxurious as well as the satin trim. The color is so rich it almost appeared to be black in color but it is most definitely Hunter Green. I will be wearing it to a Christmas Party in a couple of weeks and on Christmas Eve!
