I spent many hours trying to find a frock coat close to where I live in Portland, Oregon, and came up empty. Then I went online and discovered The Historical Emporium and the Callahan Frock Coat. I measured my actor and when the coat arrived shortly after I ordered it, I tried it on him and it fit perfectly. He is portraying Harvey Scott, the long-time editor of The Oregonian newspaper, so he had to look dignified. Plus, we are filming the short play he is in, so I could not get by with some kind of cobbled together fake frock coat. This lovely Frock coat was purchased as a gift for my son. The quality is outstanding. It fit my 6'4" sons frame perfectly. He absolutely loved it. Look forward to doing business with Historical Emporium again.

I wanted to love this coat, but the cut was bad. Too much extra material in the upper chest. You would have to be a weight lifter with a big chest and slim waist for this to fit properly. I returned this and got a cutaway coat instead which does fit better. But paying shipping three ways made it a much more expensive purchase. I would order a different frock coat, but won't take the chance. I'll look local where I can try things on ahead of time.

The coat was lightweight and well constructed. It fit nicely, and I intend to use it as my "preacher's coat" for many occasions.

This is a great frock coat. I like the way it fits and looks. The material, though cotton, is heavy. I thought it would be much more lightweight for the summer which is why I got the cotton instead of wool. It still deserves 5 stars..

The clothing that I ordered are for a Hickory Golf Outing. I also do reenactments / rendezvous, 1800-1850. Everything that I ordered looks good and fits good.

The pants run a little tight in the waist and thighs, so I order the next size up since they have no stretch. They are not hemmed to allow for all heights.

Fantastic coat great fit.

This is one extremely well made coat and the brushed twill feels heavy enough for some abuse but is super soft from being brushed, I've even had a drunk seamstress rub her face on it (it was super weird). Plenty warm for fall and will be used for laying in winter, may be a bit much for summer. It does have somewhat of a greenish hue under incandescents, but brown under the sun and regular lights. True to size; I'm a size 42 on tape and in my regular suits, so I ordered the same, and it fits perfectly.

Nice chocolate brown color, deep pockets, and good construction right down to the button holes. Soft cotton fabric with enough bulk to stay warm even on chilly autumn mornings.

Is a good thing but i can't wearing them it is two numbers to big. :-( But i have take the size with your instruction. resend is not a option is to expensive from swiss to usa. that's a shame.

I like this coat, I wanted one for a steampunk outfit and this fits the bill nicely. I have one small criticism and that's why I didn't give it five stars. It has no hip pockets. This may be because of historical styling, but I do find it a bit of a drawback what with car keys and the like. Still, it's a great coat and I love wearing it. The sizing is good (I did take note of the issue with US sizing since I'm in the UK) and it fits really well, looks good too.

The size 44 is narrower than my workware jackets of the same size. An incentive to lose weight is a good thing.

I placed my order, ordered 2 sizes bigger than my normal waste, they are slightly big, but I didn't want the tight look.... so perfect for me. I could totally see how some customers would only want to order 1 size larger though, if they wanted the pants to fit near perfect. My order shipped the next day!!!!!! I ordered a bunch of other stuff too, and the whole order shipped the next day! Sure, I grabbed items that the website said they had in stock, but still, great turn around! I bought the pants that go with this jacket as well, and I have to tell you.... I could wear this suit to work on a daily basis and it will hold up the same or better than a normal suit you'd buy at a men's store. I have zero things to say that are bad about this jacket. The longer length is classic. Makes me look like I'm a little more important than the guy w/ only a standard length jacket.....

I ordered as advised an jacket was too small. Next size up was out of stock so will have to wait a while longer. Fabric is pretty heavy, so not a warm weather jacket.

Bought the Callahan frock coat to use during Museum tours of which I am a docent. Received many compliments on my outfit, all of which comes from Historical Emporium. I portrayed a Victorian undertaker for the Halloween season and was told I looked like I fell out of a history book. Couldn't have felt prouder. Heavy weight coat which should keep you fairly warm when the cooler fall weather sets in. I'm happy with the color as it is a rich black and not charcoal. Material is a bit coarse but not a problem. Fit is true to size ordered. Happy with my purchase.

My son was so pleased to receive this coat for Christmas. He looks quite dapper. As a tall, slim teen, this style coat really suits him.

This coat is absolutely awesome, classy and gives a dark touch to my Gothic-Victorian look. It is very comfortable, made of a quality fabric and can be worn for any occasion a gentleman needs to show up. I highly recommend it. Only downside: The sizes sometimes require adjustments depending on your size. This was my case for the length of the sleeves.

Purchased this coat for a wedding. Followed instructions for sizing and it fits perfectly. Very nice high quality garment.

I wanted this coat to pair with other items of my costume. It's of a high quality and the sizing is pretty much dead on! I will say it would be nice if the coat was a little tailored in the waist region, but this is not a criticism worth paying ant note of. I am 6'4, so pay attention to the long sizes as they are definitely the right choice for us giants.

What a very nice, well made coat! Upon receiving, this coat is exactly as it shows in the pictures. It hangs perfectly and all seems are tight. The material is very nice, tuxedo quality. The Callahan frock coats are the best value frock coats that the Emporium offers; I have one in each colour!

The frock coat is well made, looks good and a fair price for what it is. I am happy with the coat, but wish there were a few changes. The padding in the shoulders feels a bit too stiff and bulky, something with a more natural shoulder shape would be nice. I was also a bit disappointed with the weight of the coat. The site does state the weight clearly, so this was more built up in my head, but a coat with this design, but made of a heavy material (such as wool), would be amazing. All in all, a good coat and I look forward to seeing what other coats Gentleman's Emporium releases in the future.

The coat is nice over all, well made. But I expected(wished) more rich looking fabric. Also because of thin fabric , I can see through the metal part of covered buttons. I think it may be easy to torn. I wish that more measurements are available when purchasing.

Good fabric, nice details on the back vent of the jacket. This gives it a tailored look even though it fits a spectrum of sizes. We were very pleased.

The Emerson Frock Coat is very well put-together. It's a little heavier than I was expecting. Not too much so but, with a cardigan, would make for a quite reasonable Fall weight overcoat. The inner pocket is a bit higher than one might expect, but not at all difficult to access. Just an adjustment going from my Coburn to this (plus left/right transition). Very happy with the build quality, fit, and finish.

This is my first time ordering a coat from Historical Emporium and I am incredibly satisfied. The fit is awesome, the length is perfect. Only downside, without really being one, is that the sleeves are slightly long a few centimeters. Nothing alarming, since it is something that is easily arranged in a sewing store. All in all: a big 5 star for everything! The quality of the fabrics and the thickness of the garment make it an excellent choice for our Canadian climate. I highly recommend it for its awesome Victorian look.

This wool is a tropical weight wool. Has a smooth hand and nice drape. Lightweight so it's a good 3 season coat. If you're always hot it's a good 4 season coat.

I needed a decent coat for a train trip on a vintage coach and the Davenport was just the ticket. Perfect fit and quality construction

It's difficult to strike the balance between extravagant and appropriate; something you could wear to a party or a formal occasion, and at first I was suspicious about the brown with black velvety accents as being too much one or the other, but I took a chance, and am very pleased with the results. This coat is like no other I've seen, and reminds me of the sort of things seen in bicentennial portraiture. It still has the traditional true-frock cut (e.g. the lower panel is a separate piece of fabric), yet remains both striking and and distinctive. A light all-wool shell makes it functional too. Despite being wool, this is not intended as an especially warm coat, so it could be worn most any time of year.

OMG that coat made my son-in-law soooo happy. He looks fantastic in it and the black velvet lapels are wonderful. The wool weight is perfect for Nevada's weather. It was a fantastic Birthday gift.

I love the look of this coat with its velvet trim and vintage cut. I'm not thrilled with the fabric itself, it's labelled as wool but the fabric is a very loose weave with a felt-like appearance and cheap feel. It's nice enough to keep, though. I'd love to see this trim style with different fabric.

I really appreciate this coat. The lighter weight is excellent in slightly warmer weather! It hangs well. I would note that this coat has shoulder pads, so those ordering should be aware of that.

The fabric seemed a bit lightweight for a frock coat and for the price. If/when I make one I will choose a slightly heavier weight fabric. I purchase these items as costume pieces (investment in my stock) and I plan to use them for shows more than once.

I especially like this coat. The black velvet lapels and collars that contrasted with the color of the coat itself was exactly what I was looking for. It's also not too thick, so it could even be worn in milder weather. Overall, this coat is perfect for a gentleman's leisurely walk in the park or to a Charles Dickens-themed festival, steampunk, etc.

This is a nice piece. At first i thought it was a little on the light side as far as the materials go, but being lighter allows it to be warn it warmer weather. The fit was perfect and it looks good in a photograph! Being a photographer this is important to me. I would recommend this item for anyone who wants to look like a riverboat gambler!

This coat is perfect for the fall/winter. It’s has weight to it and very well made. I needed it for a cemetery tour I was involved with.

This was described well both in the description and in the comments. To be clear to future people purchasing, this is a very thick garment...almost as thick as a jean jacket, but stiffer. I purchased this for everyday dress up and I love it. but it will take a minute to break in and if you are in a warm climate, this is not the best choice. I look forward to purchasing other colors as well. Thank you!

True to the description and images. Also true to size with room for a think garment underneath if desired. Not many options out there for this style of frock. This looks better than just a costume piece

The fabric is sturdy--essentially denim. Brushed, so with the soft hand of old denim, but with the stiffness of new denim. The fit is correct to slim--for a more casual fit, maybe order one size up. I'm not wholly happy with the seems on the shoulders--they don't lay quite right, but perhaps as the garment breaks in, the folds will relax into a more flattering lay. Still, overall, a very nice coat.

As I mentioned in my review of the Livingston Black Brushed Cotton Vest (which I love), I am a professional carriage driver and I wanted some Victorian era clothing to help me look the part more. While this coat, like it's matching vest, does tend to attract horse hair rather well (which is remedied with the simple application of a lint-roller) I am absolutely in love with it. The fabric is high-quality, as is the stitching that holds it all together. I love the simple yet elegant design of the coat, as well as the handy inside chest pocket and the (very cleverly hidden) two inside tail pockets. These tail pockets were so cleverly hidden that my girlfriend and I couldn't seem to find them, though the wonderful customer service representative at Historical Emporium gladly pointed me right to their location inside the tails of the coat in the lining. This coat is also rather warm on a chilly night, but not so warm that I cannot wear it on the warmer days. I have a 43-inch chest, and I ordered this coat in a size 46. It fits me quite comfortably over my vest(s) and other attire. I would gladly recommend both the Historical Emporium and this frock coat to others!

This coat, (as I named the review) is very simple. The material has a very thick industrial feel. It's possible that some of the frock coats of that period were. There are no pockets at all on this coat. So with these two facts I could not use this one. This coat is more outfitted for western wear the period maybe the mid 1800's if you are using the coat for costume it would be fine.

i wasnt sure about this one but when i had it i lived it and i still love it, it feels smooth, it is now my favorite when winter comes.

Depending on your outfit it might be good to plan a size or two larger. Especially if you're planning to wear a shirt + vest. Other than that the coat is excellent. I'm a fan.

The Khaki Frock Coat is darker than I expected, which is exactly what I wanted since the brown color was sold out. Nice quality, and well made, this coat is just right for warmer days and nights, since it is a fairly light weight coat.

I have taken my charcoal Callahan frock coat to a tailor who says that the "balance points" are all off and the sleeves sewn on incorrectly. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have your coats (and other items that should fit according to formal standards) manufactured in a country, and by people, that are familiar with weraing these type of items...?

My experience with polyester, including blends, has been a love-hate thing for a long while. I have to watch what I spend on any one costuming item, so it makes certain things attainable for me... but generally doesn't look top-notch, or lacks a bit in how it's put together. Sometimes, though, I get lucky. This coat is an example. The fabric doesn't have that awful polyester shine that even some blends have, and it feels quite comfortable. The fit is nice, though a little roomy in the shoulders. But when worn with a full outfit, it looks right. I happen to prefer a two or three button front, but the color won me over, and I have to say that I feel the desire to buy the other colors. Oh, to be wealthy!

Again, another well made product. Not ecstatic about the material, but I understand the economics and am glad it was affordable.

This coat was poorly constructed. I took it to the tailor and he could not fix the puffiness in the shoulders because it was not made in a way that could even be fixed without rebuilding the whole coat. He didn't have the fabric, so this was not even an option, not to mention the expense. I found a different coat online that was better.

I have to say i am very happy with this coat.

The coat was well put together and the material being polyester was as I expected and acceptable. The shoulders, however, made me look like I was trying to try out as a linebacker. I took it to my tailor which I use for minor adjustments and he said that the shoulders were designed for a size 44 whereas the coat was a 38. He would have to take out two inches of shoulder and rebuild them. The total cost of tailoring was more than the cost of the coat. I've been highly pleased with the shirts and pants but this is my second strike with the frock coat.

I loved this coat when I first saw it on HE modeled with some trousers I was interested in. While I tend only to purchase natural fiber fabrics, I was very pleased with the look and feel of this blend! I was especially happy that it is a lighter/medium weight fabric than it may appear in the photos. But it's not an inexpensive feeling lightness -- it has a very nice hand. I already have long coats for cold weather wearing here in the PNW, so this one is absolutely perfect for spring, and even summer and fall. I'll be wearing it a lot! This coat is nicely constructed, and will likely hold up for my lifetime. The only negative is the plastic buttons. For me, they detract from the otherwise elegant look of this coat, but the price point for such a fine garment was very reasonable. I did replace them with some nice leather buttons, which likely would have added a lot to the shipped price, but make a big difference in the overall effect.

The size is a little small but that's OK because I wear it in lieu of a jacket and wear it open. If I was going to wear it as an overcoat I would order a larger size. Light weight for southern living.

I really like the Emerson Frock Coat. I usually stick to 100% cotton or wool, but this coat is a very nice blend. The material is soft and comfortable and it has the weight of an average sports coat. It seems to be the same material as the tweed Inverness coat. The flap pockets on the front are functional, not just for show. The detailing is solid. All around, this is a nice, well made Frock coat. I am delighted to have added it to my collection.

Coat is well made, fits properly and looks great on. The only negative I might offer is that the nap of the lapel doesn’t seem to lie flat. It may be tailored incorrectly but it might just need a good pressing. I haven’t had a chance to sort it out yet. At any rate good value for the money spent.
