I purchased this dress for historical re-enactment and to showcase the 1870 Peterson's Magazine Shawl I made from the pattern in the original magazine. The dress and shawl go together beautifully!

My husband particpates in an Annual Gentlemen's Motorcycle ride and I wanted an outfit that would match his look. This suit is beautifully made. Since we live in Colorado and have lot's of red dirt and dust, I expect the white ruffles will quickly get dirty and will probably add some black ruffles to the bottom hem. I have to admit I only own one white tank top and that is it for that color here! Did I say my husband loves me in this??

I'm a man, years ago for Galveston's Dickens on the Strand, my late wife got one of these in brown, and I got a merchant outfit - the frock coat, vest, top hat, etc. This year, a new lady friend of mine and I decided to be a little wacky for the Houston Museum of Natural Science Halloween party. My late wife's outfit was a pinch too tight, so I got this for me. I was an 1880's lady sheriff, handcuffs, etc, I tell everyone how well made, authentic and comfortable the clothes are and hope to get more friends to buy from you as we all go to Dickens this year. People are used to stuff from Party City or those temporary Halloween stores and are really impressed with high class stuff and are of an age that we can spend a little more on fun. (but I'm done with any gender bender til next Halloween)

Love dress. Size ran big

I do not and have not worn a dress in many, many years, but I really enjoyed putting this dress on along with the Hoop Underskirt. I am a short person and both the Skirt and the Hoop Underskirt will need to have some adjustment done to the length but otherwise, I am very happy with them. I ordered a size larger than I normally wear but it may be I actually do wear the size I ordered. I am excited to actually put it on for the Christmas parade this weekend. True to size-chart size. I'm trading a medium for a small. (Size 4) It has lot's of material over-all, and is plenty long for 5'7".

The length is very long and it took me a long time to shorten the very full skirt I am 5' 6" and needed to shorten the dress 4". Thank for alerting me that this dress was again available. I am shor-waisted so expected the bodice would be long for me but was willing to try it knowing I could return it if it fit poorly. So, yes, it is a bit long but still looks fine. I also ordered the Walking Skirt in the Purple color & it looks great worn over the dress. Looks love lovely with the matching Bonnet as well.

It may seem a little unusual to write a positive review for an item we returned, but the garment itself was not the issue. My wife is short-waisted and just under 5'4", so the way it fit was such that we could not effectively alter it. This is in no way a judgment of the dress itself. The material is excellent quality, very comfortable, and looks great. The finish of the garment was outstanding, with almost no loose hanging threads, which indicates time taken to do it right and a seamstress with some real experience. Make no mistake, if the fit had been a little closer, we would have paid a bit extra to her seamstress to perform the final fitting simply because the dress was well worth a little extra expenditure. But the height of the dress and the waist issue were just a little more than we wanted to take on. Otherwise, a superb garment nd one that will serve well. Definitely worth 5 stars. I have made numerous purchases from H-E, and have always been very pleased with the products. Occasionally, sizing may be a little off, but my experience with H-E has been no different than with any other online or brick-and-mortar merchant. Different manufacturers always have a little different way they size clothing. H-E is generally always spot on with its sizing, so no complaints at all. Thanks for the great job you guys do!

Well made. Love the pockets I am 5'1", 150 pound, chest 39", waist 37", hips 42. I ordered both a Large green and a Medium red (wine). The large was more comfortable in the chest, but I needed the length hemmed by about two inches and the sleeves shortened. The red was tighter in the chest but not uncomfortable, and the sleeves and length were perfect." Love the pockets which are hidden in a side seam. Fit my larger Pixel 9 phone perfectly. I ordered both a small and a medium classic cotton petticoat. They were the same length (they reached the floor so I had to tie the drawstrings high on my waist). There is a LOT of room in both (almost enough to fit another person in it) so I went with the small as I did not need the extra ruffles around the waist. I wore it with the slightly-to-large -for-me muslin bonnet and a gray apron from another site (I had already loaned out my muslin apron which would have also worked well),

i’m so pleased with the quality of this dress! the fabric is so nice and thick. also… it has pockets! that was a lovely surprise. my package arrived exactly when they said it would. overall i’m very pleased. my only gripe - it is huuuuge. i ordered a Medium as i’m 5’7” and about 140lbs and fit M for basically everything. this dress fits more like a Large! one review noted it being big and i wish i had taken this into account and bought a small. i had a friend alter it for me.

I have been buying clothes from Historical Emporium for a few years now, because of the high quality of workmanship!! Although I'm not always spot on with sizing, the fabrics used, cloth covered buttons and the attention to detail never disappoint. This dress is very comfortable to wear and looks great!!! For me, living in a hot climate, I would have maybe liked this dress to have a collar of some sort to protect my neck from the sun as I ride in my sulky!! I have been looking at this dress for awhile. Had to get it. Wonderful color, quality and style. I'm sorry I waited so long.

I was not expecting this dress to be quite so beautiful as it is. The fabric hangs so perfectly and blows just great in the breeze, while still being very durable. One of the button holes needed reinforcing, since it kept coming open, but otherwise this dress is far better than I expected in all ways. And that is not to say I had low expectations, I just thought for the price, it was not going to be QUITE this nice.

I really like this dress. It looks like a dress from the 1830's. Next month I'll be wearing it along with the Muslin Bonnet in front of the Alamo in San Antonio. I'm part of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and we are doing a presentation to celebrate the independence of Texas from Mexico. The dress is made well and looks very authentic.

I was searching online for dresses that would resemble styles from this time period, not expecting I'd find one that is more like a recreation AND at a price I could afford. I didn't buy this to use as a costume (although I could of course do so) but simply as a dress for any occasion I'd want to dress up since it's just my personal style. I contacted customer service to ask for some more detailed measurements of the dress, and they responded very quickly with all the information I needed. Since my measurements are currently a bit between two of the sizes I went with the larger and figured I can have alterations made it necessary. Surprisingly, I don't think I'll need to. Even more surprisingly, the torso and the sleeve length of the dress are more than adequate for me - and I'm 6 feet tall! Overall, this dress appears to be well made, it has lovely detail to it, and the cotton fabric has a really nice thickness and softness. I already have my eye on some of the blouses and I've told a friend about the website because it's just such a cool find.

The dark color in the picture online does not show how very well designed and well sewn this is. Unlike costumes, this is made to last.

Over all very pleases with this dress. It did loose a button the very first time I washed it, which was more than a little annoying. Other than that is is everything I had hoped for.

The dress fits my torso like a glove, but the sleeves are incredibly baggy and long. Will be getting them tailored, but other than that the dress is great. Great material and historically accurate.

LOVE this dress. Personally this is something that I will be able to wear all the time. The quality is excellent. This is not like a costume at all, but is a great dress. For me this fit true to what my size normally is. I originally sized up using the measurements but then needed to exchange for my usual size. Exchanging was quick and easy.

I put together a costume as a Presbyterian Church Lady for our Florida town's rededication of its Presbyterian Church founded in 1895 (and still standing.) I had only to add a dickey with a standup collar, add a cameo, black hat with egret feathers and granny boots for an authentic look. The dress fabric is a dull black sturdy cotton with decorative pleats and embroidery down the front. Very authentic -

This says it is royal blue, but it is actually a floral print design. Other than that it is a nice outfit. It doesn't match the shiny vest I bought my husband to wear. I am not sure if I got the wrong dress or if this is supposed to be floral print. I was thinking it was blue satin but it is not.

The fabric has a really nice feel to it, is a good weight, & the structure of the dress is very detailed & finished off very well. I love this dress. It's perfect for the Victorian events I want to wear it to. It's in 2 pieces; so as I lose weight I can simply fold and sew the waist line and it's hidden under the top. I can also add a few chains and swap out my hat, shoes and bag and I have a Victorian Steampunk outfit. It's absolutely perfect for all the events I have planned for the next year.

I had my eye on this dress for sometime as I attend the Dickens Fair in San Francisco every year. Being in between sizes in the hips I was hesitant to get a size medium for fear of it being too tight or for that matter a large size and it would be too big. The representatives assured me that the larger size would work, and taking into consideration the hoop skit to be worn underneath they were right and as a result , the entire dress fit like a glove. The material is gorgeous and everything from the buttons, the sleeves, the lace and pleats below are extremely well made. Tis true as one other reviewer wrote that if the skirt portion is too long, then simple roll up the waist a bit and voilà! It takes some practice to get used to walking in a hoop skirt but overall the effect is stunning and one feels as if they have gone back in time.

I ordered this suit for a murder mystery dinner fundraiser that was set in Old West days. I won the best dressed award! It is a pretty suit. However, the sizing is really off so bear that in mind when ordering. I had read another review that the skirts run small so I ordered a size larger than I normally wear so the skirt would fit (it did) but then the top was way too big! So, skirt ran small, top ran way big. It would be nice if you could order the pieces indidually so that both would fit correctly.

Very nice material and beautiful pattern. I'm 5'4" and 148 lbs and it fit beautifully. The length of the skirt will adjusted but is simply a matter of rolling up the waistband without need for any tailoring. This looks wonderful and will be fun to accessorize for our Old West parties and reenactments.

This outfit is the hit of our play. It is beautifully constructed. The material is high quality. It is just beautiful. Because it is all cotton, I would recommend ordering the next size larger if planning to wash and dry yourself.

I ordered this dress for my daughter's role in a theater guild performance of The Secret Garden. It arrived fast and was exactly as described on the site! The dress was very well made and a perfect fit ( an amazing dress for a reasonable price)!

Size small (5 foot 4, 120 lbs), it's 100% cotton so I'm glad it's initial fit is a bit too big since it will most likely shrink even in cold water. Looks just like the pictured dress. Good quality material. The only reason I have it at 4 stars is the fact that it's a bit short-- but it looks that way in the picture too, so it's not misleading! I think it's very historically accurate, good for reeanactors or Anne Shirley wannabes "Marilla! The puffs!" ;)

An ensemble actor costume. Easy upgrade, change out poly lace, interesting buttons for cf vertical visual lengthening. Add period accurate trim. Didn't love the sleeve flounce this go round, easily changed. Skirt pattern is good for a community college needs.
