A complete success
My husband loves wearing this cape. When he is really cold there is room to wear it over his casual winter coat and still look good. A complete success.

Good quality for the price
Good quality. Warm and substantial but not overly "heavy weight". Fully lined. Expeditious delivery. Reasonably priced. No complaints.

I wear formal Scottish attire frequently, and the Inverness is the traditional outerwear. Yours fits wonderfully, and is suitable in any weather. I do not hesitate to recommend it as an excellent value.

Best. Overcoat. Ever.
Possibly the favorite item I've ordered from Historical Emporium so far, this is a strong, sturdy, and warm overcoat with great style. Definitely draws attention, but doesn't look like a cheap costume coat at all. Warm, practical, and effective... kept me comfortable and dry on a recent boat tour of Prince William Sound, Alaska.

Decent Product
A good look, suitable for all kinds of costumes, or just for a person wanting to look different! One minor problem--a new button had to be sewn on immediately. Also, when you put it on, the seams on the upper part tend to fall in an awkward place, so some shifting around is required. Other than that, it seems to be a quality coat, and I'm looking forward to wearing it!

Great coat!
I was concerned that this coat would look small on a big 6'-2" guy like me... but it fits great! A welcome addition to my costume collection, and I hope to get further mileage beyond just Halloween!

Better than expected
This is better than I had expected. I normally wear a size 46 to a size 50 and while a bit snug it fits fine. If I had to guess I would say it's a size 48. I prefer my coat sleeves long with cuffs and these are somewhat short but not so much so that it would be a problem. I will be adding cuffs since that is something I can do myself. I plan to replace the buttons with some polished metal ones but the plastic bottons that it came with it are sewn on nicely, no problems there. Shipping was fast and hassle free. One thing I feel needs mentioning is that this is a "spot clean only" coat no dry cleaning or machine washing. Still it's a head turning coat with great style at a good price.

very good over all.
This coat is really wonderful. Yes it is not wool however it is cut well and fits well. The cape falls correctly and the length is just right. I am not the tallest pine in the forest. I stand 5'6" tall and have a pretty good build. This coat fits my 46" chest really good. Doesn't flop about my 34" waist. It drops about three quarters of the way between my knees and ankles. It looks good and feels good. It is not lined as the description mentions and this can sometimes be a wee bit of an issue when putting on and talking off the coat. My shirt sleeves tend to drag inside the coat sleeves; this would be avoided if it were lined. This is the only reason I have rated this four rather than five stars. I like the coat and look forward to years of good use.

Well-made and wonderful cloth and feel - though it is described as one size fits all (Size 50) - but it was to tight for my size 48. Great value if you are size 44 or less.

My son's face on seeing this coat. And then to feel the beautiful fabric and finally to put it on. It fits perfectly, made exquisitely, and is a stunner in every way. I do not believe it could be bettered. I am sure my son will be wearing this for many years to come!!

You'll never be rid of me,Toddy
I ordered the Inverness coat for my own usage, after the purchase of a victorian tophat for my daughter, The coat is very well made, and of a comfortable weight. at my height of 5'11 the coat is a perfect length for me falling between my knee and ankle ,and as with my earlier puchase shipping was prompt and I had the coat in less than a week.the color is a reddish chocolate brown which although is very attactive leaves me wishing it might have been a tad darker or even a grey tone, but that is just me. Overall it is a very stylish topcoat and I am sure it will bring many good comments from my friends. I am so glad that I found this website, and am sure that more orders for your great merchandise will be made in the near future. Thanks again.

Exceeds expectations
I fully expected this coat to be mere costume considering the price, but it is quite functional as a true topcoat -- plenty heavy and warm.

Inverness coat
This is a great coat and very well made.Truly an asset to my Sherlock Holmes/ Victorian clothing collection. The shipping was fast which is also a bonus.
Dec 15, 2012

Very useful
This was purchased as a period appropriate topcoat to wear when greeting the audience outside the theater after performances of Don Nigro's play Ravenscroft, and it certainly looked better than a more modern coat when wearing an Edwardian costume. It's also a rather nice coat, and I'm old enough to wear something like this just about any time and just claim to be a little eccentric. At 6'2", and a bit over 200 pounds, this fit very nicely over a 3-piece suit, though being unlined, I did have to hold on to the ends of the suit sleeves when I put it on. Not really a problem, though, considering I've had the same issue with topcoats costing several times what this one did.

Nice Cloak
A nice cloak...very heavy weight. Small neck when buttoned and very thin lining in pockets...would not trust with keys or cell phone.

Always wanted one of these
I've had my Inverness cloak for about a month and am very pleased with it. Large enough to wear a heavier coat underneath if needed. This cloak is the "perfect" garment for me in the winter when I want to sit outside on the porch or go for short walks around the property. Not too heavy and large enough to wrap around for warmth or to allow air in to cool off.

Fantastic coat. Big enough that I can wear another coat underneath if I need sleeves. Also big enough I can wrap another person up in it to share the warmth. Everything I hoped it would be. Great quality, comfortable lining and nice big pockets.

This Inverness is an outstanding product! Ordering was easy and it arrived promptly. I've waited to review it because the winter has just been too warm to give it a good wearing, but I recently traveled to a cooler climate and wore it for several days. Its a decent thickness of wool, and where the cape falls, the thickness is doubled. It is quite roomy and intended to be worn with a jacket underneath (it could also easily accommodate a thick sweater or even a heavy jacket if you needed). I wore it with only shirtsleeves and a waistcoat and was perfectly comfortable in upper 30's weather. By the way, when the wind gusts--its spectacular. I want to stress, like most of Historical Emporium products, this is functional clothing--not a costume piece. It appears to be exceptionally well made. This is my second purchase from Historical Emporium and I've been delighted with both and look forward to making many more. I've wanted one of these my entire adult life--but as anyone knows they can be cost prohibitive. A wool Inverness purchased on-line through a Scottish kilt-maker could set you back close to a $900; and when I was in Edinburgh about 10 years ago, I found one in a retail outlet for 375 pounds (north of $600). Historical Emporium offers a very well made product at an incredibly reasonable price. I very much hope they come out with this wool version in other colors--say an nice brown tweed?

The cloak will not be worn until next summer, so I cannot review it properly for how it is on a day to day basis. However, it has arrived quickly and it looks great on my partner, for whom I purchased it. And he loves it, too. We'll know better how it performs 6 months from now!

When I was in graduate school in England in the mid-60s, we wore shoulder capes as part of our uniform -- they were wonderful and since my return, I have only once seen a coat that had a cape -- I purchased and wore it out! Now I have found another and while I don't look for the cold in Minnesota, this will bring back warm memories and warm shoulders.

Nice, but not functional
I was excited with anticipation while awaiting the Black Wool Inverness Cloak I had ordered from Historical Emporium. I was looking for a formal heavy wool garment to wear in New York City winters that would give me a dash of Victorian panache. Though this garment seemed to be put together well, the wool fabric was fairly light with only a minimal satin lining. The pockets in the lining were so thin I would hesitate to even carry my house keys in them for a single evening. From the descriptions and reviews I had read on line, I had expected a more substantial outer garment that I could wear on a regular basis. In reality, I would regard this as a nice piece of costume rather than a functional garment. I regretfully had to send it back.

Love it! Not sure one size does fit all. I am a short individual. If I were much shorter, the coat would be dragging on the ground. Naturally, it could be hemmed. I like it ankle-length! Definitely a head turner!

I'm not interested in cosplay, but functioning garments. This is a good one. I've worn this cloak for over a year now in Duluth Minnesota (where it's appropriate for ten months out of twelve) and London. It is the only overcoat I've worn in that time. I wanted to give it a good durability test. It has passed. I initially had some problems with buttons coming loose, and seam allowances being a bit on the slight side, and have done some patching, but I've quite honestly worn it about everywhere that did not involve fishing, hunting, or machinery repair. I believe that I had one of the first of these made, and that may explain why the durability could have been a bit better on buttons and seams. Would be 5 stars but for that. For warmth: It's pure wool. I wouldn't wear anything else out here where the actual temperature can be twenty below (Fahrenheit) during the day. It does not work as a stand-alone garment at such temperatures, but is large enough to function as an Anorak shell (and I'm more than a bit husky), under which one may wear a standard wool blanket dogsled shirt if necessary. Wool also breathes better than any synthetic or cotton garment, and so, with less layering, I've worn this in London for all temperatures up to 60 degrees (Fahrenheit, of course.) Embarrassing situations: As long as the wind is moderate, or consistently from one direction, the cape is manageable. In London, however, where the wind can whip around from many angles, one may...

Inverness "Great" Coat
A very nice coat which is VERY large - consider ordering the next size down. I had to make a return on the size I usually order. Otherwise I am very pleased with the quality & workmanship on this item. I use this as a "great coat" (IE: over top of a jacket) Historical Emporium is the fastest delivering service on the internet I have ever encountered. (Having lived in a remote community which necessitated ordering via the internet). Since making this purchase, I have also ordered other items which were just as nice & just as quickly sent. I'll order off these folks first before looking elsewhere.

I had been searching for a quality coat of this cut and design for several years. Then I found this website and this coat. It is totally everything I wanted. I read the reviews prior to placing my order and noticed I think 3 of them commented about the size chart so I ordered mine a size smaller than I had intended. It fits me like a glove. With the detachable cowl you're getting two coats in one at a fantastic price.

Looked great for my costume!
i bought this for my bloodborne cosplay which i wore to comic con this year. Overall it was a very nice coat and gave me the exact look i was going for. Plenty of people loved my costume and how accurate i looked, i was really surprised to get so many peoples attention! By the way, this coat is very loose. i ordered a small which was my recommended size and and i could literally fit a second person in the jacket with little issue. Also, the coat is very simple in terms of utility. only side pockets and thats it. No inside pockets or anything else of the sort. At the end of the day it did what i wanted it to do since it was originally for just a costume, but i can see myself wearing it for other reasons in the future, but be prepared to get some weird looks. people kept looking at me like i had 2 noses for some reason.

Good, not an Inverness
This was a good coat. I failed to take American sizes into consideration so the medium/large was a bit big for me, but it'll do. point of order though. An Inverness coat has no sleeves. this does, so it is in fact an Ulster coat with mantle. just pointing that out. But yes, top notch. I'll have it taken in a bit and it will be superb

I'm a big guy, and so I was worried that the sizing on this would not work out for me. However, it's VERY roomy, and I can even wear vest, shirt, and frock coat underneath. It looks great. And best of all, it has the heavy feel of old clothing. (I don't mean it looks old, it's brand new, but it's got a certain stiffness and heft that I associate with old clothes of this era that I've found in attics. In other words, it feels like a brand new antique- if that makes sense. I'm looking forward to wearing it every chance I get, and only wish it was still socially acceptable to wear a cloak like this every day. I would definitely recommend.

Pretty good.
I really like it. It's the type of coat that "Barnabas Collins" wore on the classic gothic-horror serial "Dark Shadows" back in the '60s. Although it could be a little heavier for really cold weather, it's the type of coat that remains comfortable to wear inside. Anyway, it's so classic to wear, who would want to take it off anyway?

Not as good as I had expected.
This coat is made by a different vendor that the brown one. That is really sad. I was disappointed to find the cape does not hang proper, kilted to the left side it hangs a wee bit off and feels lopsided when I put it on. It is also rather short, falling well above my knees. Historical Emporium was quick to respond to my request for an exchange and pointed out that there was nothing they could do about the length as this manufacture built all their coats the same way. They did offer to let me return the coat so they could look the the cape and asses the defective cape and replace the coat if warranted. This just seemed a wee bit time consuming and tedious I will have a local tailor have a shot at it and do what they may. The truth is it does not look as good as the brown one but it will do for my general usage.

nice, but too short
I am very pleased with the quality of the coat, but it is almost comically short. My husband is average height, 6 ft (or 5'11', according to his last physical), but it is barely knee length. Another 4 inches would make this a stellar item.

edit of nice but scratchy
I feel I need to edit my earlier review... to be more clear to potential customers I would like to say that the coat is most likely fine for nearly all people... I just looked at it one more time and felt it... it is not nearly as coarse as i earlier stated...(must have been a little too sensitive that day!!)... anyway... i do believe that it is of very high quality and soft enough for most... (and no the company did not contact me about my earlier review)..... now i feel like the princess and the pea ... and me a 71 year old goat!! my apologies and hope this helps some... nice but scratchy
maybe I should have known better.... but I was hoping I could wear this just over a long sleeve dress shirt.... it is a good cut and fits me ok.. I am 6'2" and about 195 lbs.. so not too big for the coat... the main problem I have with the coat is that it is coarse wool... and since I would have to wear a coat under it.. I will end up giving it to the local thrift store so perhaps this will give someone a good holiday bargain.. shipping was on time.... box was ok condition.. everything was ok.... if the coat was lined like a jacket that would work then... anyhow.. .hope this helps anyone thinking of buying this item... best of luck, scottie

The Inverness Coat
This coat looks great and is soft to the touch. It is fairly light weight and yet warmer than expected. I find it very comfortable to wear (though it is not suitable for the very low temperatures here in winter). I cannot speak to the design relative to authenticity, but from a practical standpoint it would be better with more than three buttons -- I would have at least five and maybe six. It is slightly snug on me so I suspect that it is not quite as large as advertised. Nonetheless, I recommend it for those seeking this type of garment. I get a lot of positive comments from complete strangers, and as an aside, there is no lack of familiarity with Mr. Holmes.
